President Mahinda Rajapaksa did not promise to the Sinhala Ravaya, the extremist Buddhist organization, that he would ban cattle slaughter, Senior Minister of Urban Affairs, A.H.M. Fowzie, told Ceylon Today.

The President promised to look into their demands, in response to a memorandum submitted by Sinhala Ravaya, but he did not say he would ban cattle slaughter,
Minister Fowzie reiterated. Earlier, the media reported that the President promised to ban cattle slaughter within the next two months. The minister said he clarified the news report with the President, who had told the minister that the statement was far from the truth.

The President categorically denied having given any promise to ban the slaughtering of cattle.
