Walallawita PS chairman remanded in bribery case

2013 Jul 10

The Chairman of the Walallawita Pradeshiya Sabha was on Tuesday remanded until July 23, following an order issued by Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya.

When the suspect chairman was produced before the magistrate, officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption informed court that they possessed a video recording which shows the Pradesiya Sabha Chairman, asking for and receiving a bribe.

At this point, the lawyer representing the suspect, Attorney-at-Law U.R. de Silva said that what had taken place was a transaction between two members of the same party, adding that this complaint had been lodged by the Chairman of the Bentara Pradeshiya Sabha, Gayan Sirimanne, in order to sabotage his clients political career.

The defence counsel added that his client was traumatised by the affair and requested that court grant bail for his client, as his wife is due to have a baby.

The Bribery Commission informed court that the suspect chairman of the Walallawita Pradeshiya Sabha had asked for a bribe of Rs. 2.5 million, adding that he had received Rs. 500,000 and had been arrested while in the process of receiving the balance payment.

The Bribery Commission informed court that they were able to carry out the sting following a tip-off from the Chairman of the Bentara Pradeshiya Sabha, from whom the bribe was demanded, to transport soil across the Walallawita area, in accordance with a contract he had received in relation to construction on the expressway.
