These two parents began a fast near the gate of the Bandarawela Madhya Maha Vidyalaya on Friday demanding the admission of their two children, who they claimed were left out by the authorities after an assurance that they would be admitted to Grade 2 this year.

"We live adjacent to the school and in 2012 our two children were denied admission to Grade 1, but we were given a categorical assurance that they would be admitted this year, which didn’t materialize", they complained.

"Children residing in other areas have been given admission to this school while our children have been deliberately shut out", they asserted. "This is gross discrimination".

They said that it was after fighting a vain battle since the beginning of this year that they decided to stage a fast near the school to focus attention on discrimination and double standards.

The health condition of the two mothers had deteriorated by yesterday as they refused to take any food or water. "What we are asking for is justice".

Education authorities remained mum on the incident. Up to yesterday evening, nobody in authority had visited the two parents to look into their grievance.
