Sri Lanka teachers' union protests recruiting retired officials to administrative service

2013 Jun 27

A education sector trade union in Sri Lanka, Ceylon Teachers Union today protested the moves of the provincial councils to recruit retired officials to the vacant positions in the education administrative service while there are sufficient qualified officials in the service.

Ceylon Teachers' Union secretary Joseph Stalin Fernando charged that the Provincial Education Secretary of Western Province is taking measures to recruit retired officials under contracts to positions in the education administrative service in the Western Province.

He argues that the move not only violates the state administrative circular but also recruiting retired officials when there are officials in active service is committing a grave injustice too.

Meanwhile, Education Secretary of the Western Province, S.T.Kodikara, told a local TV channel that there is a severe shortage of officers in active service who can fill vacancies existing in the education administrative service.
