FNF local rep allowed to leave country

2013 Jun 27

Sagarika Delgoda, the Sri Lankan representative of the German funded Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), Fredrick Neumann Foundation (FNF), which is alleged to have conspired to topple the Sri Lankan Government, was allowed to leave the country under a bond of Rs 5 million, by the Colombo Magistrate's Court, yesterday.

The order was issued after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) made an appeal in this regard to Chief Magistrate, Gihan Pilapitiya, when the case was taken up for hearing following a motion filed by Counsel Dharmathilaka Gamage, representing Delgoda.

Counsel Gamage pointed out the Fundamental Rights of his client were violated when the CID interrogated Delgoda on 24 June at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), without a Court order.

It was reported Delgoda was grilled for over eight hours by the officers of the CID.

ASP Abeysekara of the CID said there were serious doubts as to whether Delgoda would return to the country or engage in actions against the country from abroad. ASP Abeysekara also said further investigations are underway about the activities of the leading German funded NGO operating in Sri Lanka, and its activities against the country. "Thus far, the CID has not named any suspect in the case," he said.

"According to the rules and regulations, there are no approvals for NGOs to spend their funds on political activities. An investigation is underway to disclose as to how the FNF obtained their funds and how they spent it here," he said, (BS)
