Court suspends letter of suspension issued to five u'grads

The Court of Appeal yesterday suspended till July 1, 2013, the letter of suspension issued by the vice-chancellor of the Sabragamuwa University, suspending the studentship of five third-year students. The suspension of the letter is effective till July 1, 2013.

The first respondent, vice chancellor and the respondent members of the University Council, were directed to allow those students to sit the examinations to be held in June/July 2013, The results will however be released after the writ application, filed by five students, is finally determined.

Notice was issued on the first respondent, VC Professor Mahinda Rupasinghe and the other respondents returnable on July 1.

The student-petitioners were Sampath Gunesekera and four others, who are members of the students’ union.

President’s Counsel Saliya Pieris appeared for the petitioners.

The students had requested the Court to quash the decision of the University Authorities to suspend them.

The Bench comprised Justices S. Sriskandarajah (President) and Malini Guneratne.
