2010 Dec 28

Around 3,000 young girls under 16 years of age become pregnant annually, said Dr.Nilmini Hemachandra the Community Health Specialist of the Family Health Division.

The Information Department said in a statement, quoting Dr. Hemachandra, that “the incidence of pregnancies in Sri Lanka is between 380,000 to 420,000 and, of those, juvenile pregnancies amount to 25,000. 7.5 percent of the total comprise females below 20 years of age and 0.75 percent comprise females under 16.” The Ministry of Health, the Family Health Division and the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society have launched a series of awareness programmes to teach girls to avoid dangerous and risky practices in order to prevent unwanted pregnancies.   “Under this programme the enhancement of life skills of children and conditioning of girls towards motherhood are being implemented  from Grade- VI on, said Dr.P.G.Maheepala, the additional secretary of the Ministry of Health, at a media briefing at the Health Education Bureau, yesterday.   “In order to protect young girls from a fate like that parents and teachers should develop a better relationship with the children and direct them towards a more religious environment,” said  Dr. Ayesha Lokubalasuriya
