Tamils Issues on BJP Priority List, Says Rao

2015 May 27

Claiming that the BJP has managed to enroll 45 lakh people from Tamil Nadu in the last four months, Muralidhar Rao, national general secretary of the BJP, said that all the Union Ministers would tour the State in the coming months as part of a mission to strengthen the party in Tamil Nadu.

“Strengthening the party base in the southern State is important for us. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been paying special attention for the welfare of Tamils both in India and in Sri Lanka,” he said while talking to reporters here on Tuesday.

Detailing the one-year-achievement of BJP government, Rao said that during this period, Modi paid special attention to issues concerning Tamils. “He was the first PM to visit Jaffna in Northern Lanka. The Prime Minister made efforts personally for the release of five Tamil Nadu fishermen who faced capital punishment in the island nation,” he said and added that the government was making consistent efforts to resolve the fishermen row with Lanka.

“Special attention was being paid to spread the glory of Tamil language and celebrating greatness of Tiruvalluvar across the country was a testimony to this.”

When asked about citizenship status to Lankan Tamils like in the case of Hindu immigrants from Bangladesh, Rao said both were two different issues. In the case of Bangladesh Hindus, they were suppressed of their religious and human rights. But in Lanka, the BJP government was duty bound to get political rights for Tamils there.

Answering a question on alliance with AIADMK, the national general secretary said that the NDA was still active in Tamil Nadu. When asked if his party would field a candidate in the by-election to R K Nagar seat, he said that the party would consult its allies in the State before making a final decision on it.  Replying to a query on PMK projecting Anbumani Ramadoss as CM candidate despite being part of the NDA, Muralidra Rao said that it was an internal affair of the PMK. However only NDA can identify the CM candidate for the assembly election, the BJP leader observed.

‘UPA Answerable’

BJP leader and Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday said former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the congress party owe an explanation about the startling revelations made by former TRAI chairman Pradip Baijal charging the UPA government with collective culpability in the 2G scam.

On the one year rule of the Modi government, he said, “The country has been redeemed of the scams that plagued during the UPA regime.” Earlier, participating in a tree planting programme of Isha GreenHands at Peelamedu, he said the Centre would launch a massive tree planting programme across the country on June 5.
