Civilians not allowed to address LLRC: Herath

Civilians not allowed to address LLRC: Herath

2011 Jan 21

DNA MP Vijitha Herath in Parliament yesterday charged that civilians who were keen on coming forward to testify before the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission were being threatened and turned away.

Mr. Herath made this point while speaking during the adjournment debate on the situation in Jaffna in the House yesterday. The DNA MP said that this makes one wonder whether the motives of the members of the LLRC were genuine or not. “The LLRC was appointed to investigate the causes of the 30-year-old conflict, but one wonders whether this objective could be fulfilled if the citizens of the North are prevented from testify before the commission,” he said.

Referring to the other incidents taking place in Jaffna he said that there was a sand dredging Mafia in the North. He warned that the government was not interested in national reconciliation, especially in Jaffna. He made this point referring to the situations with regard to the national anthem being sung only in Sinhalese.

Mr. Herath said that Tamils should be allowed to sing the National Anthem in their own language, as they have done so from the time the National Anthem was created.
