Minister Muralitharan tells LLRC: Tamil diaspora ignorant of country's present situation

Minister Muralitharan tells LLRC: Tamil diaspora ignorant of country's present situation

2010 Dec 14

Economic and educational development along with equal rights to the people could bring the harmony among all communities.

All Tamil politicians have to work together for the benefit of the Tamil people, said Deputy Resettlement Minister Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan. He was giving evidence before the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) yesterday at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Centre,Colombo. The Government has launched many developments projects including vocational training and rehabilitation in the North and Eastern Provinces.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has given priority to develop those areas. The Tamil diaspora didn’t understand the present situation in the country. Rather than shouting slogans, the diaspora can collect money and help IDPs in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan forces are doing lot of charity work in those areas he further said. President Mahinda Rajapaksa was the only leader who took a strong decision to destroy the LTTE. No previous government took that decision. There is no chance of the LTTE regrouping. People have suffered lot due to war. They have sad and bad experiences, he said.

There are more than 80,000 widows. We have to look after them and develop those areas. Also we have to change the people’s mindsets. Politicians in the past had created the ethnic problem. They spread racism and terrorism.

“The LTTE killed a lot of Sinhala people. They also killed Tamil people and several intellectuals. I talked with Prabakaran and said we have achieved nothing. We should agree with the Government. I tried several times to correct him but he never agreed. He never agreed. I told them I don’t like to fight. The LTTE never wanted peace. When they are weak, they ask for peace. They were never committed to peace. They purposely spoiled peace talks, he said.

Answering the question raised by LLRC member he said that when 600 policemen were massacred during 1989, he was in Jaffna.

”The LTTE basically used foreign money to buy weapons. Through the TRO they earned a lot of money. Those countries knew clearly that LTTE used the money for purchasing weapons,” he said.

Answering another question regarding unidentified groups in the Eastern Province, he said that in the Eastern province there are no such groups. Law and order is maintained very well by security personnel.

Speaking about the final stage of the war he said that no war crimes took place. If the LTTE was the freedom fighters, they claimed to be, they should have never held human shield. They kept 300,000 people as human shield. The Government had to save these people from the LTTE clutches.
