138 undergrads suspended in one week

138 undergrads suspended in one week

2013 Jun 12

By Aisha Nazim

More than 138 undergraduates have been suspended within a period of one week in a 'mass-scale' attempt at student suppression by the Higher Education Ministry, the Socialist Students' Union (SSU), alleged yesterday (10).

Speaking to Ceylon Today, SSU National Organizer, Nalinda Jayatissa, said to date, over 250 undergraduates have been suspended, and six student unions have been disbanded and banned in universities, while 138 students were suspended within a week.

Citing incidents of student repression, Jayatissa highlighted the police attack against protesting undergraduates of the Sabaragamuwa University, and said the SSU will take action against the authorities for suppressing and intimidate students.

The union will lodge a complaint with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) within the course of the week, and has already informed the World Federation of Democratic Youth about the suspension of students and the suppressing of student activities.

"We are taking every possible action to fight for the rights of the undergraduates to end the suppression we are being subjected to. We are also having talks with the Federation of University Teachers' Association (FUTA) on how to go ahead in dealing with the issues. We also hope to launch a massive protest march in Colombo next week," Jayatissa said.

Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, and other relevant officials were not available for comment, despite numerous attempts to contact them to ascertain the reasons behind the suspension of the undergraduates.
