ACHSU sees another fee levying medical school at SJH

ACHSU sees another fee levying medical school at SJH

2013 May 26

By Don Asoka Wijewardena

The All Ceylon Health Services Union (ACHSU) yesterday accused the Sri Jayewardenepura hospital administration of making arrangements to enroll medical students with lower marks to be trained as doctors for a heavy fee.

ACHSU General Secretary Gamini Kumarasinghe said the rich could afford it, but the ordinary people could not pay such a huge fee.

He told The Island that the Jayawardenapura hospital director had made a statement that in addition to the opening of a bio-medical training unit, the hospital was interested in medical students’ training courses which would be a potential source of revenue.

When contacted, Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital Director, Dr. S. Gamage dismissed the allegations, levelled against him as vicious. He said being a member of the GMOA would he not take such decsions. "If the GMOA agrees with the training progrmmes, I will go ahead with it. I will never go against the GMOA. I will never make any baseless statements to tarnish the image of the hospital", Dr. Gamage said.
