Students were willing, not forced “ Police Rehabilitating Jaffna Uni students

2012 Dec 21

The four Jaffna University undergraduates placed in rehabilitation camps following their arrest, agreed to go into rehabilitation on their free will, police said yesterday.

Speaking to Ceylon Today, Police Media Spokesperson, SSP Prishantha Jayakody, said despite claims made by student unions and human rights movements, the four undergraduates agreed to be rehabilitated willingly, and were not forced by the police.

SSP Jayakody also said the students were placed under arrest as they had been involved in activities connected with terrorism.
However, disputing these claims, the Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) claimed the undergraduates were arrested not for terrorism, but for commemorating the Heroes’ Day on 27 November.

“Since when has commemorating the deaths of the people you had looked up to, been linked with terrorism? Regardless of a person’s point of view, they should have the freedom to commemorate whom and what they want,” IUSF Convener, Sanjeewa Bandara pointed out.

Refuting Bandara’s allegations, the Police Media Spokesman said the police were completely within their rights to arrest the students, and a court order is not necessary for arrest and detention.
