Student Unions intensify agitations

Student Unions intensify agitations

2012 Dec 20

By Aisha Nazim
Student Unions have threatened to intensify agitations against Private Medical College (PMC)s, by involving academics, doctors and parents in protest campaigns, which will begin next month.
Convener of the Medical Faculty Students’ Action Committee (MFSAC), Najith Indika said they have always fought against the privatization of education, and though it has been partially successful, they will continue with their struggles until the Malabe PMC is shut down.
“For the last couple of years, we have been fighting against the PMC as medical students. However, we will increase our agitations tremendously and will embark on aggressive protest campaigns during the next six months,” Indika said.
He charged that the Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake was more involved in the development of private universities than he was involved with State universities. The minister went as far as to grant the Malabe PMC a Rs 600 million loan facility, Najith alleged adding “It is over three years since the Malabe PMC was established, and it still does not have a teaching hospital. Clinical training is mandatory for all medical undergraduates, and we cannot produce qualified doctors without having all the adequate facilities. Furthermore, there are students who have not even passed their A/Ls.”
Starting from January 2013, there will be combined joint agitations with all student unions, medics, academics and the general public. Najith reasserted State university undergraduates will continue to fight for free education until the threat of private universities is removed.
