Many Children In Colombo Are Wheezing

2012 Dec 17

By Indika Sri Aravinda
Many children living in Colombo are suffering due to wheezing, the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr Ruwan Wijemuni said.
He attributed it to the polluted air from vehicle emissions as a result of an increase in the number of vehicles on the streets of Colombo in recent times.
He said that with the increase in the number of vehicles many people were suffering from heart ailments, cancer, impotence and wheezing.
Dr Ruwan Wijemuni said that research had found that children including new born babies suffer due to wheezing in Colombo.
He also said that most affected by wheezing are school children and Montessori children.
In Sri Lanka some two years ago there were 2.5 million vehicles on the streets while over the past couple of years another 2 million vehicles were added to that number.
Dr Wijemuni said that air pollution from vehicle emissions were also affecting pavement hawkers, roadside store operators and traffic policemen.
In an attempt to reduce the air pollution new measures are to be introduced from next year, Dr Wijemuni said.
He said that a report on this would also be submitted to the Cabinet next year.
