Principal vacancies in 103 national schools

Principal vacancies in 103 national schools

2012 Dec 13

The Ministry of Education has taken no measures to appoint principals to fill the vacancies in national schools, the Ceylon Teachers' Union (CTU) charged.
General Secretary of CTU, Joseph Stalin, said 103 of the 355 national schools have vacancies for principals.
"The Ministry of Education has left these posts vacant and has appointed acting principals instead. The Public Service Commission was supposed to appoint the principals, but whenever the Commission appoint a principal for the job, the Education Ministry turns them down. Instead, they still have their political stooges filling in," he charged.
Stalin also said, only the officers of the Sri Lanka Education Administrative Services (SLEAS) General Cadre are qualified to be appointed as principals. However, officials of the SLEAS Special Cadre are also principals now, he complained.
"The Special Cadre officers are not qualified to be principals – they are only qualified to be subject teachers. But now, even subject teachers are appointed principals. Why aren't the officers of the General Cadre appointed instead?" he queried.
Stalin urged the government to fill the vacancies at least by the beginning of the next school term, January 2013.
