University students of Sri Lanka facing increased rights violations

University students of Sri Lanka facing increased rights violations

2012 Dec 13

Students unions affiliated to Sri Lanka's universities say that there is an increase in the number of rights violations faced by university students.

The Student Organization for the Protection of Human Rights and the Inter University Student Federation (IUSF) have voiced concern over the situation citing the Student Human Rights Report 2012.

Head of the Student Organization for the Protection of Human Rights, Nuwan Baduge has said that there have been 524 cancellations of classes, 104 external disciplinary inquiries against students, 67 Mahapola scholarship cancellations, 104 law suits and 44 imprisonments of students in the past year resulting in the suppression of student human rights.

The report released by the two students organizations have stated that Sri Jayewardenepura University students had faced law suits, imprisonments and class cancellations due to holding protests.

IUSF Secretary, Chinthaka Rajapaksa has said the rights of undergraduates have been increasingly violated over the past year and the government has not taken any action to prevent the situation.

The report released contains statistics from all 13 universities in the country.
