Jaffna Security Forces Commander, Major General M. Hathurusinghe, has assured the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna that the police and the security forces personnel will be withdrawn immediately from the vicinity of the Jaffna University premises.
Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna, Dr. Vasanthi Arasaratnam, along with the Deans of various faculties in the university met the Jaffna Security Forces Commander at Palaly yesterday evening.
The academics had urged the immediate removal of the security forces and the police personnel in the vicinity of the University, in order to create a conducive atmosphere for the university to resume its academic activities.
The academics also pointed out that following the arrest of four students by the Terrorist Investigation Department (TID) on Thursday, the functions of the university have come to a standstill.
The Jaffna Commander, responding to the Vice Chancellor, agreed to withdraw the troops and the police from the university premises and insisted that the University should not allow any politician to enter into the university. He also said the security forces will also be not permitted into the University premises.
In the meantime, one of the four students who were arrested on Thursday was released yesterday. The student who was released has been identified as Suthrashan of the Medical Faculty of Jaffna.
