Release political prisoners-TNA

2012 Nov 29

The TNA yesterday called upon the government to release all political prisoners.
TNA MP Suresh Premachandran, participating in the third reading stage of the budget debate, under the headings of the Ministry of Prisons Reforms, said: "It has been more than three years since the war ended and there are still 810 political prisoners in several jails across the country. There were promises that the cases against them would be expedited but this has not happened."

He said that most of those in prison were involved in minor offences and should be released as they were no threat to society.

He said: "We have a Minister here who was a member of the LTTE, a Chief Minister who was also an active LTTE member and now KP is living freely in Kilinochchi so why can’t these people, who were arrested for minor offenses, like giving water or food to the LTTE cadres, be released?"

Premachandran also alleged that the prisoners were stripped naked before being taken from prisons for Court hearings and on their return stripped naked once again and searched. He said they were treated in a humiliating manner.

Minister of Prisons Reforms Chandrasiri Gajadeera said that there were only 318 political prisoners while around 1,600, who were previously in custody, had been sent for rehabilitation.
