Five editors to be warned

2012 Nov 19

At least five editors of newspapers, that published reports on the proceedings of the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) probing charges against Chief Justice Shirani Banadaranayake last week are to be summoned for a meeting with Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa. The Speaker is expected advise them to refrain from publishing such material till the conclusion of the PSC's proceedings.Several MPs had taken with the Speaker the manner in which the subject was being handled by different media institutions, Parliament sources said yesterday. Letters summoning the editors are expected to be dispatched today. Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe, Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardena and Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga were among those who had raised the matter of media reports, connected to the Committee, on the floor of the House. The Speaker has advised members of the Committee as well as all parliamentarians to refrain from making public comments with regards to the Select Committee and warned that those who disclose to the media details of discussions held at Party Leaders meetings, except for those included in the minutes of the days, will be disallowed from attending future meetings. The reporting on the impeachment motion against the Chief Justice in the State media came under criticism from UNP Kurunegala District MP Dayasiri Jayasekara on Saturday. He said that video clippings given by Opposition legislators, criticising the husband of the Chief Justice several months ago over the NSB investing money in the stock market, were now being edited and shown over State run television in a distorted manner. The Speaker said he would look into this allegation and take corrective action. On Friday, Chief Government Whip Minister Dinesh Gunawardane raised objections regarding some comments made by DNA MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake to the media regarding the composition of the Select Committee. Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga also brought up a privilege issue saying that a State owned newspaper had carried a news item that the Chief Justice had accepted the charges against her.
