Diaspora full steam to put Lanka in UNHCR dock

2011 Feb 20

Intelligence Services of the government revealed that the Tamil Diaspora plans to take up Human Rights allegations against Sri Lanka at the International Human Rights Council sessions which are set to get underway in Geneva, next month, with the assistance of some Ministers of European countries, informed sources told this newspaper.

The government it is reliably understood is in posession of details regarding such allegations being directed at it by a section of the Tamil Diaspora in Europe on the sidelines of the UNHRC sessions in Geneva, Switzerland.

These Tamil Diaspora groups had even begun to hold talks with important ministers of a few governments in Europe to accomplish their sinister motives in this connection, these sources further revealed.

It is also learnt that the government is currently engaged in formulating plans to counter the alleged activities of the Tamil Diaspora -- before the commencement of the UNHRC confab in March this year. One of the covert tactics of these diaspora groups is apparently to secure an adverse report through the Committee appointed by the UN Sec Gen Ban Ki-Moon and present it before next month’s confab.

As a strategy for countering these moves by the diaspora, the government of Sri Lanka recently removed its High Commissioner in Britain Nihal Jayasinghe before posting him to the UN as its Permanent Judge of International War Crimes Tribunal. This posting had been carried out through the UN’s Sri Lanka office in Colombo.
